Best Attractions in Cluj-Napoca
The Gothic St. Michael’s Church
The „St. Michael” Cathedral, standing tall for almost seven centuries, has become a symbol of Cluj and a monument of Gothic architecture that leaves visitors in awe. This magnificent cathedral is often compared to the Black Church in Brasov, another famous Gothic landmark in Romania. But it’s not just the impressive architecture that makes this cathedral so special; it’s the rich history that it holds within its walls.
Throughout history, the Cathedral has hosted over 50 parliamentary assemblies, making it a place of great importance for the city and the country. King Matthew Corvin himself was baptized in this holy place, and he later participated in the church’s reconstruction. In addition, Queen Izabella offered the crown to King Ferdinand I within these walls.
But the Cathedral’s importance extends beyond royalty, as it was also the site where Transylvanian princes such as Bathory Zsigmond, Rakoczi Zsigmond, Bathory Gabor, and Bethlen Gabor were confirmed in office. Even more, in 1939, the priest of the Marton Aron Cathedral was enthroned as Bishop of Transylvania, and in 1944, he delivered a powerful sermon in this holy place, condemning the persecution of Jews.
The construction of the „St. Michael” Cathedral began shortly after King Carol Robert granted Cluj city status and ecclesiastical autonomy in 1316. It’s estimated that the construction was completed around 1419, during the reign of King Sigismund. The coat of arms above the gate tells the story of its construction, featuring the coat of arms of the Romano-German Empire, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.
The Cathedral has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years, facing destruction by fire and natural disasters. In 1489, it suffered from a fire, and the restoration works were carried out under the care of King Matthew Corvin. After the Gothic tower was ravaged by a fire in 1697, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style from 1742 until 1744. The Church faced further destruction by the reformers in 1545 and later by the Unitarians between 1566 and 1616. It wasn’t until after this time that it was restored to become a Catholic church once again.
The interior of the Cathedral is adorned with intricate baroque sculptures, including the pulpit and the altars sculpted by Anton Schuchbauer and Iohannes Nachtigall. The baroque tower was rebuilt by the Catholics, only to face destruction by lightning and an earthquake. During the year 1837, the Cathedral underwent a reconstruction in the neo-Gothic manner, which included a separate tower being added to the church.
Overall, the „St. Michael” Cathedral stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the remarkable resilience of human achievement. Its history and architecture continue to inspire visitors and locals alike, making it a must-see destination for anyone visiting Cluj.

The National Museum of Transylvanian History
The establishment of the National Museum of Transylvanian History in Cluj Napoca on November 23, 1859, was an extraordinary achievement that continues to perplex even the most astute historians. Its physical location, situated in the Museum Plaza region, specifically on Constantin Daicoviciu Street, no. 2, is one of the many puzzling aspects of this institution.
The collection of museum experienced several relocations, which ultimately led to it settling permanently in 1937 in the current premises on Daicoviciu Street, owing to the lack of suitable space. The ethnographic collection and the art gallery, both integral components of the museum, played a pivotal role in establishing two other Cluj museums, namely the Art Museum and the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania.
The current collections of the National History Museum of Transylvania, which are both diverse and extensive, are exhibited in the fundamental presentation that showcases the historical progression and level of civilization on the territory of Transylvania from prehistory to December 1, 1918. This comprehensive demonstration is illustrated by objects from archaeological discoveries, medieval and modern collections of pottery, mowers, glassware, weapons, documents and photographs, books, newspapers, and much more.
The Roman lapidary is home to epigraphic and sculptural pieces crafted from marble and other varieties of stone, discovered in the province of Dacia. The medieval lapidary, an awe-inspiring collection that can only be described as a symbol of the evolution of art and architecture over the centuries, assembles in a unifying and representative collection, a series of creations of the stonemasons who, over the centuries, toiled in the workshops of the Cluj center.
The museum’s treasury, a veritable treasure trove of sorts, presents to the public more than 4,600 gold and silver objects, including Eneolithic idols, silver and gold monetary treasures, jewelry, medals, decorations, and everyday objects made of precious metal. It is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of generations long gone.
The Art Museum of Cluj-Napoca
The Art Museum of Cluj-Napoca stands as an exceptional exemplar of artistic splendor and majesty, showcasing a cornucopia of Romanian and universal art that dates back to the 15th century, persisting until the present day. A significant collection of about 3,600 paintings, 450 sculptures, and other works of art totaling around 13,000 are kept at the Cluj-Napoca Art Museum.
The permanent exhibition that adorns the halls of the Art Museum consists of the National Gallery, a breathtaking amalgamation of artistic creations, housing over 200 works of painting and sculpture. Visitors are beckoned to explore the 21 rooms allocated to this magnificent exhibition, a true treasure trove of artistic masterpieces.
The building that serves as the residence of the Cluj-Napoca Art Museum is none other than the „Bánffy Palace in Cluj”, an epitome of Baroque architecture that is undoubtedly one of the most significant edifices in Cluj-Napoca. Its grandeur is so impressive that it has rightfully been included in the list of architectural heritage buildings and Romanian national artists.
Presently, the Cluj-Napoca Art Museum offers a sanctuary for connoisseurs and enthusiasts of Transylvanian art and culture alike, drawing in both domestic and foreign visitors annually. They come to witness not only the National Gallery but also a diverse array of temporary exhibitions hosted within the halls of the museum.
Here, over 200 pieces of painting and sculpture have been meticulously curated and presented to the public eye, a true testament to the exquisite art collections possessed by the Cluj Museum. These displays chronicle the evolution of Transylvanian art, whilst capturing the essence of the specific multiculturalism space.
Additionally, visitors are encouraged to stay abreast of the latest offerings by regularly checking the museum’s website, which showcases the various temporary exhibitions that are available for viewing.
The Botanical Garden
The „Alexandru Borza” Botanical Garden of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, a masterpiece founded in 1920 by Professor Alexandru Borza, sprawls across a vast expanse of almost 14 hectares in the southern region of Cluj. After the Union of Transylvania with Romania and during the establishment of Cluj University, this botanical garden flourished as a tourist attraction and a crucial didactic and scientific space within Babeș-Bolyai University.
The garden, listed as a historical monument in Cluj County, developed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Romania in 2010, houses an impressive collection of more than 10,000 plant species from various parts of the world, divided into distinct sectors, such as ornamental, phytogeographical, systematic, economic, and medicinal. It proudly showcases Romania’s flora and vegetation, featuring plants from the Transylvanian plains, the Carpathian Mountains, Banat, and other regions.
The botanical garden is home to several breathtaking attractions, such as the Japanese Garden, a picturesque Japanese-style garden with a flowing stream and a Japanese-style cottage, and the Roman Garden, a treasure trove of the ancient Roman colony remains, including a statue of Ceres, the goddess of grain and bread, alongside a plethora of cultivated plants that dominate contemporary Romanian agriculture.
Visitors to the Botanical Garden of Cluj-Napoca can also take advantage of the garden’s many amenities, including a gift shop. The Botanical Garden of Cluj-Napoca is an essential destination for anyone who wants to discover the beauty of nature or unwind from the chaos of the city.
The Cluj-Napoca Central Park
The „Simion Bărnuţiu” Central Park, also known as Central Park Cluj, is a widely loved and notable green area in Cluj-Napoca. Nevertheless, few people realize that this park was established by a group of females. Central Park was officially inaugurated in 1827, rendering it one of Romania’s earliest public parks. However, the notion of the park can be ascribed to a group of visionary females who recognized the need for a public place where Cluj residents could unwind and relax.
Under the leadership of Elisa Richter, a distinguished regional personality and philanthropist, a group of females amassed the necessary funds to acquire the land for the park. This was no effortless accomplishment since the Transylvanian Royal Families possessed the land at the time. Despite numerous obstructions, the group persisted and finally secured the land for the park. This signaled the beginning of a new age for Cluj, as the park swiftly became a popular public area for all age groups. Over time, Central Park Cluj has undergone many expansions and renovations, each of which improved the park’s beauty and utility.
Recently, in 2015, Central Park Cluj underwent a substantial renovation, which entailed the installation of fresh benches, illumination, and plays regions for youngsters. Today, the park is one of Cluj-Napoca’s main public spaces.
The Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania
The Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania is an unmissable attraction that exhibits the customary lifestyle in Transylvania. The museum has a pavilion section located at the Reduta Palace on 21 Memorandumului Street and an outdoor section known as the Romulus Vuia National Ethnographic Park.
Established in 1929 and designed by renowned ethnographer Romulus Vuia, the park spans 75 hectares and is the first open-air museum in Romania. It features authentic rural households inhabited by local peasants, giving visitors a glimpse into traditional Transylvanian life. Among the numerous attractions in the park are a wooden church from Chirales village, artisanal complexes, a lime-burning oven, blacksmiths, oil presses, and various other households, each with its unique charm and character.

Unleash Your Adventurous Side at Tarnița and Beliș Lakes
Near the Gilăului mountains in Cluj County, there are two reservoirs of tourist interest. Both lakes are perfect areas for a relaxing mini-break in nature. The lakes are fed from the waters of Someșului Cald, a tributary of Someșului Mic.
Beliș
Lake Fântânele was developed in the early 1970s, for hydropower purposes. The inhabitants of the commune of Beliș were forced to move to what is now known as the village of the same name, due to the flooding of the place, at the order of the communists. The villagers had to move everything, including the dead, to the hill called the Ungurului Coast. They moved everything they could, from material possessions to the bones of the dead in the village. The remains of the former village can still be seen today, on dry summer days, when the lake’s water is very low. Among the most memorable ruins in the lake are the remains of the church in Giurcuța de Jos, one of the villages adjacent to the commune.
The Fântânele reservoir extends for 13 km and is located at an altitude of 900 m. From a tourist point of view, the lake is used as a recreational area, with sports and recreational activities such as swimming and boating or pedal boating organized.
Tarniţa
Lake Tarnița is located at the meeting point of Râșca, Mărișel, and Gilău communes and has a length of approximately 8 km and a depth of 70 m. It was built in 1974 by damming the Someșul Cald River, for the production of electricity through hydropower plants. The dam is 97 m high and spans a distance of 237 m.
As in the case of Fântânele lake, Tarnița is one of the main tourist attractions of Cluj County. Activities such as fishing, boating, or swimming can be carried out on the lake, usually in unorganized settings, but there are also organized sporting events here.
One of the must-see spots in the area is the Lucaci Stone, which offers a breathtaking view of Tarnita Lake. It’s the perfect spot to stop and take in the beauty of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
Both Lake Tarnița and Beliș-Fântânele are sights worth visiting, especially in the summer, but also in winter when you can ski on the Fântânele slope. The distance between the two lakes is 37 km. This distance, as well as that between Cluj and the lakes, can be done very easily with a personal or a rented car.
